When I was 23 I moved into a 3 bedroom apt with a girlfriend and a guy friend. The apt was part of a large condo building in the Back Bay area of Boston and our neighbor owned the corner apt next to us (well his parents did) and he was a 32 year old spoiled brat who wanted his parents to buy the condo we were renting so he could expand his. I say brat because he did not work and turned out to be crazy. Anyway, the girl that I lived with is quite attractive, 5'4'' and about 100 pounds. Within a week of moving in, the neighbor took an interest towards her and when she told him she had a boyfriend, he became crazy. He would harass us, scream at us when we entered our apt, called the cops on us if we ever made noise (the cops had to show up and on more than one occasion told us they thought he was mentally unstable and to be careful). It got to the point where we'd clutch our keys in our hand to try to make as little noise as possible because if he heard one of us enter our door, he'd come out screaming and try to prevent us from entering our apt. Keep in mind he would scream about how he hated us, we were racists, we hated him because he was Indian and we said racist comments to him (not true, and a cop once laughed at the claim when he met my friend's boyfriend, who is in fact, Indian). It got to the point that we'd met with the condo board multiple times and were starting to contact lawyers because they refused to do anything, and wouldn't even put a camera by our door so we could prove what was going on. This went on for about 6 months, and then one night he drunkenly ran after my roommate in the streets, threatening that he was going to kill her and he wished she was dead. His friend had to hold him back to keep him from attacking her. Of course, as soon as we got up to the apt, we called the cops. Luckily, I had a friend of a family friend who was a detective in our precinct and he pushed to file criminal charges against him. A mutual restraining order was taken out and after charges were pressed, his parents found out and pulled him out of the condo. We had also sent a cease and desist letter to him as well as his parents since they owned the condo he was living in. He had moved out by the time we had to go to court to pursue the charges. In the end, he moved to NYC and the judge pretty much said if he ever set foot in that condo building again, he would be arrested. Three years later, DH and I are talking about buying but I'm so scared that a situation like this will happen again and we'll be stuck because we own.
