PP with aunt who needed bi-pass at 40:  Initially her primary doctor did blood tests which came back normal.  It was only after she kept coming back for multiple visits during a month's time span complaining of how tired she was after work, how much she slept, and all the tests he had run were fine that she was sent to the cardiologist.  Like I previously said, she did not have any known risk factors for heart disease.  The primary doctor even worried initially that her health insurance was going to give him flack for sending to a cardiologist but he had tested for everything else and everything else had been negative.  Only the stress test (being on a tread mill while they monitored her heart) showed the problem.

Another question for your DH would be has he always needed a lot of sleep or does he go through periods at a time where he needs more sleep or is this entirely a new problem?  For my aunt, she was persistent with her primary care doctor because she was more tired than she had ever been in her life and it was not normal for her.  Periodic episodes of tiredness (episodes that may last for several weeks but eventually gets better then comes back down the road) may be more indicative of an autoimmune problem.  I have Lupus, so episodic periods of needing extra sleep is what I experience. [/quote]
