My daughter is a high school junior in NOVA and is interested in pursuing the pre-med path in college. From her school, there are least 5 kids going to VT that want to pursue the medical path. I thought that VT is more well known for Engineering/CS, so I am wondering why are kids attending Virginia Tech for pre-med. I know that they also rejected other schools like Georgetown, UNC, UVA, UMD, VCU, W&M etc. despite it being similar costs. Is Virginia Tech good for pre-med in terms of preparing the kids for MCAT, Clinical, Volunteer opportunities and are the VT undergrad students attending good medical colleges? We are thinking of doing ED to Virginia Tech and wanted to get this forum's input. Thank you.
The schools you listed are NOT similar in cost. Georgetown, UNC (out of state), Maryland (out of state), UVA and W&M are all significantly more expensive than VT for a NOVA student (the first three very significantly so) -- that could be the reason for the preference for VT.
This. Other than VCU there is a big difference in cost. I could definitely see preferring VCU for their strong health-sciences programs but if you hate an urban college experience, makes sense to pick VT. Can prepare for med school at either place and choosing the lowest cost option to save money for med school is a good idea.
