There was no gun in the schools. A kid gave a presentation to his Lang Lit class on a problem in society (gun violence) and the kid's solution (give everyone a gun). There were lots of finger gun motions. The schools sent a cryptic message to parents of kids in that one class. One of the parents posted about it on Falls Church City Parents and used the kid's full name, which is how word of the presentation spread far and wide. The moderator of FCC Parents deleted the post right away, but I'm sure plenty of people saw it or forwarded it. The schools are doing ????. A friend with a kid in the class hasn't received any updates from the schools after the initial vague email. Business as usual in FCC!
I don’t have a kid there and haven’t hear of this but from your own summary it sounds like a kid gave a presentation and thinks the solution to gun violence is arming more citizens. It’s not s popular opinion around here but some believe that. I have no idea about gun finger motions and either do you since neither of us were there. I’m sure we can all agree it was wrong for any adult to post a minors name on any website. I think that’s the only thing that needs to be addressed here.
OP just asked for a summary. I wasn’t judging the situation or presentation, except that I think the school’s email did more harm than good since it got people gossiping and asking what happened (hence this post from OP!). That’s my main gripe—these kind of vague emails go out all the time and it just sets off more gossip. The presentation topic doesn’t surprise me or concern me, but I’m in the minority on that. What isn’t in dispute is that there were finger gun motions—that has been corroborated many times. My kid has that teacher as well and has many friends in the class. Kids shared the same story independently with their parents. Whatever happened was bad enough (from the school’s perspective) that there will be no more oral presentations this year. That’s a shame. I’m also not surprised parents in FCC are mad about the presentation content. However, it’s not for all of us to judge—we weren’t there. I mostly feel terrible for the kid that this whole thing got blown out of proportion and the kid’s name was irresponsibly blasted to a public listserv. Nothing about that was okay.
JFC. Now finger guns are enough to get th8ngs shut down. DMV you seriously have gone off the deep end.
