I read a newspaper article about significant upcoming Wegovy shortages in the 3 lowest doses— .25, .5 and 1.0. And then got an email from Norvo Nordisc saying they are cutting back on US shipments these doses by as much as 50%. They will maintain the current supply for 1.7 and 2.4 doses. Their rationale seems to be that (in a shortage) they want to discourage new customers and maintain current ones. Shortages are expected into September. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/wegovy-novo-nordisk-ozempic-weight-loss/ It feels like they are really screwing over people who have started in the last 6-8 weeks and people who can’t tolerate the higher doses. I just went up from a .25 to a .5 yesterday. My Wegovy is covered by my insurance (thank goodness) and my MD went ahead and sent a refill for 1.0 in this week. The pharmacy still had it in stock, and my insurance covered the early fill because it’s a new dose. It felt like I had won the lottery. My hope is that I can handle a 1.7 in July. (So far, minimal side effects on .5). But, if a 1.0 or 1.7 is too high, I’m screwed. And, I’m bugged they are maintaining access only for the high doses and not for everyone already on the medication. It’s a big time, lifestyle and financial commitment. What are people who are already on lower doses (and needing to titrate up), maintaining on a lower dose because 1.7 is too much for them, or with appointments in the next week or two to start the medication hearing from the MDs/ weight loss centers/ pharmacies? My pharmacy and MD were both strongly in the “get the 1.0 now while you can” camp. And, Norvo Nordisc’s is no help. Their FAQ is basically: if you can’t get your dose at your pharmacy, call around. If that doesn’t work, call you MD (who has no way to magically conjure up the drug). Do not substitute another med, or go up or down in dosing off of the recommended schedule”. Not helpful. Are people waiting, filling Wegovy low doses and praying, switching to Ozempic? Waiting until fall?
