As far as I know this is the only out of level test MCPS regularly performs so it really helps a parent to know if a child needs more academic challenge. If your child has a RIT score which is comparable to a high school student when he is in 4th grade for example, you might want to ask the school about grouping and curriculum choices for the rest of the school year or the next school year. The nwea website on the report that came with the score can tell you what the distribution of scores are for different grades. Of course, I tried this without any success - was told they would try to make sure dc had at least one child at dc's reading level. I can't imagine any teacher having the time to do anything special for a "group" of two kids!I am really hoping the MCPS approach to grouping will change in middle school.
We also had this conversation in the fall of 3rd grade (after seeing the results) and got the same answer as you did. This prompted us to apply to the HGC for next year. Disappointed that our home school wouldn't accomodate grouping the kids of like ability across grade level to form a peer group.
