I admit. I am not an animal person. I wasn’t raised in a home with pets and never had an interest in owning a cat, dog, bird, fish etc. But I also understand not everyone is me and different things make different people happy. I hate animal abuse and think it’s lovely when someone is a great and loving pet owner. My sister is one of those people. She and my BIL have two dogs they are crazy about. The dogs are spoiled (but trained well) and make them both so happy. Neither have ever wanted children and are very content with their current life. And I adore my two children and don’t have any interest in a family pet. Yet in my Mom group it’s a common topic. The disdain for “Dog Moms”. We do daily morning walks with our young kids/infants and often there is a young woman walking around with her dog in a dog stroller. I’ve seen her physically walk the dog on a leash but the dog seems to be in poor health so often it’s in the stroller. Every. Single. Time. We see her several other moms have to start up the conversation or how much they loathe the term “dog mom”, how this woman isn’t an actual mom and how pathetic it is for people to treat animals like human babies. But I don’t see the issue? Not everyone wants to be a parent to an actual human child and as a former teacher not everyone should be a parent to an actual human child. I think it’s great that people can fill the gap of wanting to love and care for something with a dog or cat instead of the incredibly high responsibility of a child. Does this mentality stem from the notion everyone should have children and those who don’t are secretly unhappy? It’s a win/win to me. A dog is loved and pampered by someone who isn’t me. People who probably shouldn’t have children are happy and fulfilled. The end. All is good.
Yes
