Do not trade in vehicles at a dealer. Go to a Carmax type place. Sell them seperately than your purchase
DP. Interesting. I would have thought you get more when trading in. I suppose I should go to carmax first to see what I could get first and then take that to the dealer.
There are volumes written about car sellers use of the "4-square" method. Here's one of many critiques: https://caredge.com/guides/4-square-close Basically, most people are outmatched by a professional salesman. The secret of the 4-square method is to have you negotiating several things simultaneously (trade in, sales price, down payment and monthly payment), which is very hard to do. Of course, one of the finishing moves is to convince you that you got a great deal. Anyway, the conventional advice is to reduce the number of items being negotiated; specifically, arrange your own financing and deal with your old car separately. Only negotiate the price of the car - not the monthly payment. Good luck! My old cars have been very old and I have sold them to Nico Buys Cars or Craiglist.
