Spouse and I live and work in different states. So we are filing federal taxes jointly (MFJ), but we each need to individually file state taxes in separate states (MFS - married filing separate). TurboTax will let you electronically submit the MFJ federal, but forces you to file the state taxes via print & mail if you want to file in a manner that does not match your federal taxes. I've never filed taxes through the mail before. Do I need to send in photocopies of our W2s and 1099s to each state, along with the relevant state tax filing? Anything else I should know about when filing by mail? I will definitely send it via registered mail so I can track it.
For VA, you don't have to mail in supporting docs if the tax form was done using software. Likely varies by state. The software has all the instructions or just google.
