People generally raise themselves. Meaning, become and act the way they want to be. Unless there is some actual evil, huge disfunction in in their lives, Imho. Parents and how they behave is observed So, we can all work on ourselves. That's about it. Don't know the story/tv show so don't know if I support whatever decision you're talking about
Wow, do not agree. I actually used to say this about myself, for a long time. I come from a highly dysfunctional family and experienced a lot of neglect as a kid (also abuse, but I had two siblings with serious behavioral/mental health problems, one parent with serious medical issues, and one parent we now know had untreated bipolar and major anxiety issues), and just largely left to my own devices to figure out everything from puberty to friendships to school. But I was high functioning, got good grades, involved in activities and successful at that, and well behaved. So I told myself it was okay, I'd raised myself and done a good job. I later realized that my parents had a profound impact on me, and a lot of the problems of my upbringing came home to roost later on, in my 20s and 30s. I've had to work really hard to overcome them. I no longer believe it's possible for a child to raise themselves, and parents will influence the well being of a child somehow, some way, even if you don't see it at first.
