I have taught APUSH using earlier versions of the Shi textbook, when it was "Tindall and Shi" and liked it for readability.  
If you'd like a free on-line text, both the Stanford "American Yawp" and Openstax "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" are good.

Thank you! I have a rising 9th grader in the Blair magnet who insists on taking APUSH even though we are telling her how hard 9th grade is and that taking the normal/Honors level will help her have balance. She enjoys history and writing;  her worry about the magnet was that she would not grow those areas as much as STEM fields. So starting some reading this summer just to learn how to read real history textbooks would be great.[/quote]

Once your kid figures out the system it’s easy. I would recommend the you tube videos.[/quote]
