- and deploying an additional 300,000 troops: These military actions by our NATO allies will likely take place, beginning later this year. Source: Politico EU https://www.politico.eu/article/nato-is-racing-to-arm-its-russian-borders-can-it-find-the-weapons-eastern-edge-military-leaders-james-j-townsend-jr-us-one-billion-citizens-army-europe/ Europe is preparing a military defense against Russia to prevent them, by force, from expanding their war on Ukrain. The challenge to this Russian containment policy is finding, or producing, sufficient quantities of heavy weapons for effective containment. The Cold War in Europe is back on, in case anyone had any lingering doubts. Russia is Europe’s enemy and its main threat.
Differnce here, though: the borders in the Cold War were guarded by the Russians to keep the population in. Our troops stationed on the East German border were mostly watching for escapees. There were guard towers, barbed wire, and dogs on the East German side. More like a prison. However, there were thousands of thousands of US troops stationed in West Germany preparing and drilling for invasion by the Russians--but they were not necessarily on the border. There were more American soldiers guarding the East German border than Germans.(the Brits guarded the northern portion.)
