OP, is your DD very interested in history? The course registration said not to take APUSH unless you have a “STRONG” interest in history. My DC doesn’t so I pushed her to take honors history, even though she was arguing she wanted to do the AP class because she thought it would “look better” on her transcript. But now I’m second-guessing my decision to follow the school’s advice.
I don't ordinarily give unsolicited advice, but since you gave it to the OP, I'll tell you my experience. My kid took it and was glad she did (for various reasons-- you can read pros and cons in many places in this board). But I recall that when it was time to apply for college admissions I spoke to a neighborhood mom who said she was working with a college admissions counselor for her daughter and she regretted not encouraging her daughter to take it (daughter also was saying she wanted it to "look better" and mom discouraged it.) The mom said she had no idea that one class Freshman year would make a difference, but now felt that her kid was behind the others in her grade in terms of how her transcript looked (since so many at our school take it). May be very different if you're in a math magnet program, etc. But just note that universities want to see you took the most rigorous courses available.
Thanks for this. (I wasn’t trying to give the OP advice but rather laying the foundation for my own question. Either way, a big chunk of DCUM is about unsolicited advice and I’m here for it!). My DD is going to take Functions in 9th, which is supposed to be tough and time-consuming, so I’m concerned another hour of nightly homework for APUSH. But maybe I need to let her make the decision for herself.
You don’t know yet if she’s taking functions because they haven’t made the recommendations. Regardless my kid is in the same boat and though they originally wanted to take APUSH I gently suggested they don’t. I don’t buy the advice above at all. There is no reason to add to pressure.
I don't know if this is helpful, but my kid who is in 10th is taking APUSH this year. They took APNSL last year - at Whitman. We moved mid-year to California where they have allowed my child to join the APUSH classroom but normally don't let kids take that class until they're in 11th. It is a hard class.
