[/quote] I do actually think there should be a category of criminal negligence for a parent who is so negligent, abusive, or otherwise derelict in their obligations as a parent to a minor that the minor commits a violent crime. It wouldn't be applicable in every single case and I think you need to make the standard of proof here pretty high to address constitutionality issues. But I think parents should understand that they bear some responsibility for this. I also think that if he helped people understand that if they did things like attend parenting classes, and ensured their kid attended school regularly, then even if their kid committed a violent crime, they wouldn't be implicated. Create some kind of floor for parenting so people understand that if you are unable to deliver even these baseline levels of care for kids, they you are really and truly culpable for the physical harm your child might cause another person.[/quote]
