Start identifying crazy people earlier will help.
The truth is that helping mentally ill people live productive, healthy lives would require a huge infusion of resources and our country is not willing to do that. I used to work as a support counselor in a nonprofit mental health organization and I worked with a lot of mentally ill people. A lot of profoundly mentally ill people are navigating the system alone and it’s just not adequate. At best they live off social security disability and a low income housing unit but their actual health and mental state deteriorates. There need to be residential units, funded by the government, with adequate support. So many mass shooters were people whose families were just navigating their illnesses desperately and alone. The shooting event was the outgrowth of the bigger problem, which is less explosive but still tragic. I don’t see legislators attempting to address this OR guns.
