It was silly, stupid shit when it was brought up about Obama, and it's silly stupid shit when it's brought up about Romney. I'm not naive enough to think it'll stop, but I think it's ridiculous on both sides. Or do you disagree? Do you think this story should have any bearing on whether Romney is elected president?
There are a lot of things about our campaigns that I wish didn't happen and that I don't think should have any bearing on who wins. I wish that people didn't care about which candidate they would rather have a beer with, I wish that physical appearance wasn't so important, and I wish that voters didn't feel that it is important for a candidate to kiss babies. I don't think any of those things bear on a candidate's ability to govern. But, that's the world in which we live. I don't think that it is important that Romney may have engaged in anti-gay bullying 50 years ago. However, I do find his equivocation on the topic today illustrative of his character. Initially, Romney said he didn't remember the incident (despite at least 5 classmates being able to remember it). Then, he said that he was sure that he wasn't motivated by the possibility of the victim being gay. Then, he said that he did a lot of pranks in high school and was sorry if anyone was hurt. Never mind the non-apology apology, does anyone believe he would have forgotten this incident? If Romney would have simply owned up to the incident and offered a more sincere-sounding apology, then it would be a non-issue to me. But, the way he is handling it directly feeds the narrative that he simply says whatever is expedient regardless of the truth. It is that inability to be honest -- even about events 50 years ago -- that I think makes this a legitimate campaign issue.
