Santa Monica or Venice
No, Venice has far too much crime and homelessness for small kids to witness. Santa Monica though is good - we lived there with our children when they were 3/4-7/8. We're also now in Bethesda. Century City is close to Rancho Park which is close to the Lycee schools which I can recommend (we also were there for a year before relocating). I would be very careful, if you're looking up commute times on google maps, you really need to double it, because of LA traffic. Be as close to the workplace of the office located parent as possible.
So you did the reverse move we are doing! How does Bethesda compare to Southern California? Which do you prefer after living in both areas?
We are actually going back to LA quite soon... I think they both have pros and cons. Southern California public schools are underfunded and Bethesda schools are not - there's a lot more here, in Bethesda for education especially in the middle school / high school years. Having said that there was a lot of creativity and positive things on offer for the kids in the pre-K and ES years in California. If you're going private you'll be fine. I prefer the people of Los Angeles to the people of Bethesda, just because there's a less traditional and more accepting and friendly vibe.
