Santa Monica though is good - we lived there with our children when they were 3/4-7/8. We're also now in Bethesda.

I would be very careful, if you're looking up commute times on google maps, you really need to double it, because of LA traffic. We are actually going back to LA quite soon...
I think they both have pros and cons. Southern California public schools are underfunded and Bethesda schools are not - there's a lot more here, in Bethesda for education especially in the middle school / high school years. Having said that there was a lot of creativity and positive things on offer for the kids in the pre-K and ES years in California. If you're going private you'll be fine. I prefer the people of Los Angeles to the people of Bethesda, just because there's a less traditional and more accepting and friendly vibe. [/quote]
