When the people up for school board come knocking on my door next year, I plan to ask them these questions: 1. Do you have any children of your own and do or did they go to FCPS schools? 2. Do you have a spouse or family member that is a teacher and do they teach in FCPS schools? 3. What is your educational and employment history and how did those prepare you for a seat on the school board? 4. What are your long term girl goals/motivation for running for a seat on the school board? Basically I am trying to weed out the Karl Frisch's of the world - no children, only looking out for his partner who is a teacher, long-term political goals, doesn't give a shit about education or children.
I've thought about re-joining the local Democrats so I could vote for more moderate candidates during the endorsement process next year. But, apparently, they won't accept any members who've ever criticized current School Board members, so that probably rules me out, regardless of whether I align more with Democrats than Republicans on most issues. Seems like School Board elections might be a good place for a third party like Forward to establish a presence. Or maybe Independents will have more success next year, although it's been very hard for any candidate who isn't endorsed by a party to get elected.
