Pull ups. And at four, your child can get up and change the pull up himself if uncomfortable or pees through.
+1. It’s important he is able to care for himself and pull ups make that possible. Lying on his back to get an adult to put diapers on him isn’t good for him.
I'm the PP whose 4 yr old went back to diapers to address diaper rash, and you don't need a child that age to lie down for a diaper, especially one that they only wear at night and only ever gets pee in it. We put her diapers on with her standing up and she actually helps us do it -- I hold it in place and she fastens it. And she takes it off on her own and throws it away in the morning. It's really not infantilizing. Pull ups were easier, but there's no reason to make what is essentially a diaper be easy -- it keeps wearing underwear as a motivator and accomplishment.
It's been a long while since we had any of our kids wearing any form of pull-ups/diapers (old mom here). But, I feel like I can describe the nighttime routine we had going on with my middle daughter, who was a late bedwetter (oldest never dealt with this). Anyways, when DD was around this age, we still used diapers at night. We had no real reason why we didn't use pull-ups, I guess we just never felt like there was a need? At first, we did the same thing as far putting them on standing up. But after the birth of our youngest, I started just putting them on like normal, with her lying down. Changing into a night diaper was NEVER at all a major ordeal in our household, and honestly - after 4 kids - I got so fast at getting night-diapers on butts that it really didn't matter either way. I will say though, I feel like we tended to get less leaks, when night diapers went on with the kiddo lying down. I have no idea why, and have no real evidence to support it, it's just something I distinctly remember from those days. It was never infantilizing, I think because it was done so matter-of-factly..? It's just not something that anyone in our house really batted an eye at in the late evenings. TL;DR? Do what works best for you OP! Find what works for your family, and go with it.
