OP here, and yes, I actually am surprised it is held during the day. It has been a while since I was in school, but at that time, there was no such thing as an orientation, and things like parent-teacher conferences and open houses were held in the evenings so parents could attend without having to take a day off work. And I would think that during school hours that the teachers and staff would be occupied teaching, not dealing with a few hundred visitors. (Then again, back then you only had to bring your own school supplies, not supplies for the class as a whole -- times have changed!) Guess I'll talk to the school to find out a bit more about what they plan to do to figure out how worth it our attendance would be.
OP, I think you are going to need to adjust your attitude and expectations or everything will rub you the wrong way. Your child doesn't have to go to this event. You can register them whenever you want up until school starts. If you are that averse to taking a half-day off work, perhaps public school isn't for you. Neither will private school for that matter since they have many events during the day since there are many SAHMs and parents with more flexible schedules. Parent teacher conferences will be during the day for the next 7 yrs while your child is in ES just so you know. Trust me, the school really won't miss you if you don't attend this. I don't mean that to be rude but it is the truth. This is not about you. School is not free childcare. Occasionally you, as a parent, will need to participate during daytime hours. I work hourly and don't get paid when I don't work and even I don't have a problem with the 3-4 times per year I am expected to attend an event during the day (American Education Week, one field trip per year, 2 parent teacher conferences, etc).
AMEN!!!
