Yes, it is normal. No, it is not okay. I actually emailed the developers for the means and standard deviation and was told that they were not available. I was more than a little surprised by that!
Right. I was just very surprised that there’s no range at all given on the scores. I have no idea how to actually interpret them.
Frankly, I gave the test and have no idea how to interpret the scores. I LIKE this test and think it is a good match to what I see in the classroom and how kids perform on the test. I LIKE the parts of the test, that it assesses the most important parts of Kindergarten (number sense, just a little geometery, computation and patterning) I LIKE how it is laid out and is one on one with manipulatives. Having given a ton of tests over my teaching career, I think it is a strong developmentally math assessment. BUT, then they use statistical testing messy formula to give out the scores and it loses value, especially when parents haven't seen the assessment. I wish the scores were reported as a list of skills your child is able to do, rather than a very meaningless score. Maybe this will improve in time?
Agreed. The info we received was just so very vague, and the response I got when I question it was that she was above the benchmark, so why was I concerned? I mean, great that she's above the benchmark but, since I have no way of telling whether she is just barely above the benchmark or way over it, or even if the benchmark is actually ridiculously low or not, I don't know how best to determine whether there are areas for improvement that we could work on here at home or what. It just all feels very...pointless if I can't even tell what this is assessing.
