Buy from local businesses whenever you can, even if the prices are higher than what you would pay at a chain. Make brief eye contact and nod and smile or give some human acknowledgment, if you feel safe to do so. Take the Metro or walk instead of drive when you feel safe to do so. Financially support homeless shelters, animal shelters, soup kitchens, rehab centers and any other organization that does good work in your neighborhood or in DC. In any situation where you can choose to be patient, kind or simply turn away from someone acting up, do so instead of confrontation if you feel safe to do so, unless it is racist or hate speech, in which case speak up if you can. If you pass by people that become familiar faces, say hello and introduce yourself and learn their name. Greet them by name. If you see something, say something.
I agree with this list but one frustration I have is that a lot of the rich people in my neighborhood do the bolded ones above, none of the others, and then act superior because they can afford to buy all their books at the local bookstore and not Amazon, and they give a few thousand dollars to Martha's Table every year. Those are laudable things but not MORE important than the other stuff, and people need to not pat themselves on the back so hard for being financially generous when it's something they can easily afford to do. I'd really like to see people do more of the other stuff, like learning the names of neighbors and workers they see often, smiling and making eye contact with people in the neighborhood, being patient and tolerant in public spaces instead of demanding and rude.
