For what entry year, and is this to get familiar with the test or to gain substantive knowledge? Two very different things, and I'd recommend focusing on the former first, for which you shouldn't need a private tutor or a tutoring service like C2.
9th, and it's to help a smart kid with test anxiety get a better handle on how to take those kinds of tests.
Familiarity with the test probably would help more than anything else. We had our kid take a few sample tests under conditions as close as we could get to the real thing: same time on Sat AM, same breaks, etc. I would check out Test Innovators; you pay much more than a book (but FAR less than a few of tutoring sessions), but you can punch in all the answers and it spits out an analysis of the results, so it takes a little of the drudgery out of it. They also offered for extra a live, video session on strategies for taking the test, which was invaluable for our kid. But there are plenty of free resources online re. strategy (including from the SSAT folks themselves), and all the books have plenty of sample tests, so it can be done inexpensively, too. Good luck.
