What works best is a good routine on wash days, including applying enough product to get a crunchy cast that I can scrunch out. This helps reduce frizz for days afterwards.
+1, I've found the key to battling frizz is to keep it from happening in the first place. I basically never get that frizz poof anymore, even on drizzly or humid days. Instead I'll get more volume and sometimes some tightening of my curls (my hair is usually a pronounced S-wave but it will start to form fat coils under the right conditions, like today). For me the right prep on wash days is to condition, then comb in a leave in, then use "praying hands" to apply my curl protector/enhancer (this varies, but it needs to be a lightweight product with good moisture -- I can't use gels because they cause too much build up and don't facilitate second day hair for me). One more pass with a wide tooth comb, then scrunch. Also, always air dry. I shower in the evening to facilitate this. Diffusing is for special occasions or emergencies only. If you diffuse frequently, you will get more frizz. Unless the dryer is on a very cold setting (in which case it won't help cut drying time much anyway) there's just no way for it not to have some drying-out effect.
