Or Native American or mixed race or Asian.

Kind of like Americans.  In the US we don't think of "American" as an ethnicity, but it is, with smaller subgroups such as African American, or Cajun, or . . .

Similarly people living in, say, Panama, probably don't primarily identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino/a, but in America they are often lumped together with others to form a larger ethnic category.

'As to why we separate out Hispanic identity on forms that otherwise ask for race, it's because in our country there's a pattern of discrimination based on Hispanic heritage, that's unique among Ethnic groups, and is more similar to racism.  So, if an organization or the government is collecting data in order to identify potential bias and determine equal access (the most common reason for collecting this data) it makes sense to collect data about whether or not someone is Hispanic/Latino/a.[/quote]
