Modified curly girl method for shoulder length waves. Daily or every-other-day wash with curl friendly products, leave in, and apply a curling cream with a wide tooth comb. Then I generally air dry (about 40 minutes) and do a quick shake and scrunch to get out any cast. At night, if I'm planning to get a second day out of my wash, I'll spray with leave in and put it up on top of my head. In the morning shower with it still up. I don't wash it but I let it get a little wet. Then comb it and scrunch it and let it dry. Since it's not totally wet, it generally takes 20 minutes this time. Shake and scrunch out any lingering cast, but I rarely get anything second day. It's a little bit fussy but about as close as I can get to wash-and-wear. I spring for good quality cuts from someone who specializes in curly/wavy hair twice a year and it's worth it -- she knows how to remove some of the weight and bulk using techniques that dry cutting. I used to go to stylists who didn't focus on textured hair and for a long time I didn't realize that they were screwing me over, using thinning sheers and cutting my hair while it was sopping wet so they had no idea how to work with the wave. Getting proper cuts from someone who understands my hair is the most important part of my hair routine. I don't spend a lot on products (all drugstore brands) or tools. But I pay around $200 a cut. Worth every penny.
