We decide where we as adults want to go, but then look for some kid activities there. We’ve always found things for kids to do, and if it’s running around a piazza at night tossing a ball back and forth. Our kids have always been sightseeing with us and while they do complain sometimes, it’s never been a big deal.
This is our approach too. We decide where we want to go and make it fun for the kids. We do not do full on kids vacations like Disney because I have zero desire to go to Disney. A lot of our vacations are active vacations to national parks where we make out kids hike. They don't always love it but do enjoy the time outside and feeling of accomplishment when they compete a tough hike. We rewards them after the hike with trips into the town to shop/eat ice cream. We do day trips to amusement parks, but would never make an entire vacation out of it.
