Not OP but we're in the same situation. We're walking distance to Bethesda Row now but are considering a larger, newer house just two miles away but we'll no longer be able to walk in. I think once you're used to being close-in it's hard to give it up.
We lived close in for about 5 years and recently moved farther out and love it. It wasn't hard to give up. We now have a toddler and what we got (open spaces, beautiful house, community we love) is exactly what we want. We also discovered that the extra commute was basically a non-issue. About 8-10 minutes more driving on a busy day. Started to realize that, although we had lived in the city, we drove everywhere anyway (to whole foods, shopping, activities). At the end of the day, the city traffic, parking issues, etc. were more of a hassle than the new commute. Different strokes. Sometimes being farther out is actually the goal and it is great.
