I originally thought it was a way to reward the truly committed. Then I thought it was a way to avoid FA bidding wars. But the real reason has to do with the way the school's measure their Admissions Departments. The "Yield" or the actual attendance of those offered admissions is a big deal to them. So they are much more likely to offer admission to those with a high probability of attending then those who seem to be wavering between the two or those that seem to be leaning towards the other school.[/quote]
