I was ready for a while to bring it up but waited for the right moment. Once I’d made the decision l had a calmer feeling - less despair than before. Deciding to give up on a bad marriage helped me a lot mentally. I like to be prepared and made myself some notes.
How did you know it was the right moment for you? How did it go? Kids involved?
I had just been in a holding pattern and the opportunity presented itself. One day we were having a small disagreement about something and he said “do you want me to move out?” and l said “we should get divorced, let’s agree to separate and we’ll figure out the logistics of who moves out later”. So, it was a very short discussion but it got the ball rolling with that verbal agreement. I moved into the guest room that night. In the next few weeks we hashed out how and when to tell our son (he was 8), who would move out, what and where to rent a temporary apartment etc. None of it was easy or rushed, but it had to happen. I didn’t talk to a lawyer first because ex and l are always on the same page about money, but if you might not be you may need to talk to a lawyer before bringing it up with your spouse.
