Of course it's open. VA was in the works before the pandemic. It is meant as a stand-alone virtual school within MCPS, to cater to competitive athletes, artists, medically fragile students, or anyone with particular needs for whom either crowded schools or the typical school schedule doesn't work. The day is still structured like an in-person school day (this year they have block scheduling, like some magnet schools), but students can move around if they need to travel for competitions or other things. My kids are in the VA now, and while we like it and appreciate all the administrators and teachers, who are hard-working and competent, we're probably going back in-person for next year, for various reasons. Which leaves a spot for your kid... :-) We had until Jan 17th to confirm our attendance for next year. We did not confirm it.
It's interesting they wouldn't expand it, given the interest?
There are discussions of expanding it. It is funded for the next few years. But, expanding it means more funding. It's in its first year. Give them time to get it figured out. It is open to anyone and not just those listed above. I don't know if it was in the works pre-covid but it has been announced its here to stay.
