I am a foreigner, and this is the first time I hear of second cousin and I am confused. Okay, i have 2 siblings (one has 1 kid, and one has none), and DH has 1 sibling (BIL has 1 kid, and his spouse (SIL) is the only child). Everyone is in 40s, so most likely no more kids for anyone. We have 3 kids, so my 3 kids have 2 cousins (1 from my sibling and 1 from my BIL). My BIL’s kid has 3 cousins( 3 from my family). ILs were talking at Christmas dinner that BIL’s kid has one more cousin, and I was like, “ who is that?”. And, I find out that they are talking about SIL’s cousin’ kid. So, SIL’s cousin kid is considered “cousin” to their kid? They just say“ cousin”, not “ second cousin”. I have many cousins because my dad has 7 siblings and my mom has 5 siblings. So, my cousin’s kids ( I would say at least 10 or more) are all my kid’s cousins? I am not even close to any of them and they live internationally. ILs used to tell BIL’s the only child that my kids are her brother/sister, and I was like speechless.
