Coaches may or may not be school employees, and accordingly, may or may not have access to student emails. Frankly, these days, kids do not communicate via email. Typically a coach will post a list of who made the team, or which team, in one or two relevant places at the school. Outside the gym is an example. The school athletic director will also have a list. A list may also be posted on the team/sport website which may be seperate, but typically a link through the school's website, or the school's "athletic" website.
Don't they get the student emails at registration? How else would they communicate with the students?
Coaches generally do not communicate with email these days. 1. students do not use email. 2. coaches do not want 1 on 1 contact with any student. 3. Unless a coach is a teacher or other employee of a district, and that is probably less than 50% of the time these days, coaches very often are hired as independent contractors and do not have access to student information. Typically then -- coaches will communicate with team members through a group text or team site. Parents can (and should) join so they get the information too.
Can't they do a mass email to the entire group of tryout kids and say these are the kids who made it? Alternatively, for private clubs, I've seen a "you made it" form email go out to those who made it and a "sorry you didn't" group email go out to those who did not on BCC.
Think of the data entry versus posting a list in a couple locations.
