But I think they wanted the white column for a number of reasons, not least a few shot compositions with her brothers where it was significant for her to be in white (connecting her to Kendall's white shirt and also posing as a contrast to Roman) and also specifically for her dress to be drawing a line through the shot. A number of commentators have noted that there are two particular shots with classical compositions reminiscent of certain Renaissance or Baroque paintings, and having Shiv in white adds a layer to that (white often being the color used for the Madonna or for a figure like the Venus de Milo in such paintings, representing innocence). Since the plot of the episode cast Shiv, Kendall, and Roman as children begging for their father's protection, and since a major theme of the episode (and an actual topic of discussion) was motherhood and birth, putting Shiv in white makes thematic sense. That it was not a great fashion choice for the character may have been seen as secondary. Regardless of what you think of the fashion aspect, you must admit this is an extraordinarily gorgeous shot:
