He came into office in a period of stubbornly high inflation and one that was already steadily worsening. He promised to tackle it, and he did. Sharp increases in interest rates and led to a short if painful recession in the early 1980s. But once inflation was brought under control, the American economy took off. There's a distinct reason why Carter is associated with inflation and Reagan is not. [/quote]
