Great program. Parents love it. As an aside, if you kid is interested in culinary, the cooking teacher is AMAZING.
Parent of an 8th grader here… Does anyone have opinions on the quality of language arts? I love the idea of Arlington Tech, but I also want to make sure my child will be equipped to write papers in college.
As a parent who has/recent had kids at Yorktown, W&L and HB, I do not believe that Arlington is teaching writing skills anymore. Well, they teach how to write a 5 paragraph essay with an intro paragraph, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion, but do not teach any grammar or writing style.
Well yeah. Teachers don’t have time to read and critique 30 papers per class — that’s like 200 papers.
Teachers did it in the past. Even if they don't now or just don't want to, they can stagger assignments so not all of their students are writing big papers at the same time. But you know what? I don't care that teachers don't have time during the school day to grade longer papers. The focus is supposed to be on teaching kids the things they should be learning, preparing them to be successful in college and in jobs. Employers and colleges both have been complaining for years that students and young hires can't write or communicate well. Homework is part of the students' job. Grading assignments at home is part of a teacher's job -- or used to be.
