I heard on NPR that the "no more than one gun purchase a month" law that's about to be repealed was passed because VA used to be a notorious source of guns for drug lords and other criminals up and down the East Coast. And there's also another law that has a good chance to pass that would allow people to carry concealed weapons without a permit. Yippee! :( So, how worried should I be about me or my family getting shot, say, after a fender bender or an argument in the supermarket checkout line?
It's pretty unlikely. All the studies I have read suggest that people who own and carry guns legally commit violent crimes at vastly lower rates than the general population. Seriously, suppose you had a gun, and were involved in a fender bender. Would you just blast away? Of course not. So, too, for those who carry guns. They are human beings, much like you. The supermarket checkout line is a somewhat different issue, of course, I'd bust a cap if someone had 10 items in the 8 item express lane, I mean, who wouldn't? That's just Darwin at work.
