I'm a preschool teacher in a half day program. I appreciate all the gifts my families give me because I know they want to thank me. But to be honest, I donate almost everything that I receive, unless it's candy or a gift card. Even some candy gets thrown out if no one in my family likes it. And I have also received gift cards from stores that aren't near me (for example Whole Foods - I don't even know where the closest one is.) I get lots of coffee mugs - I have a set of coffee mugs that match my plates and I don't want a "Best Teacher Ever" mug. I've been given smelly soaps, candles and lotions. I don't use smelly lotions and I prefer liquid hand soap. The one gift that I do use is a decorative scarf that the children made (they did some type of tie dye.) The parents noticed that I like wearing decorative scarves - I wear one almost every day. But unless you are certain that he/she will use it, I would suggest just a gift card to Amazon or Target. I've never asked, but I do think at our preschool, both the teachers and assistants usually are gifted the same amount.
