When we lived in Dubai, it was hugely popular among Emiratis and Gulf Arabs as well as Indians and expats of all ethnicities. And I see them more and more in the UK. So not sure what you mean by American whites being really odd? Especially since half the people I see drinking Starbucks iced drinks are.... not white.
