I agree with this. I have heard people complain about trash in our city neighborhood, but most won't pick it up even if it's just paper trash. We have gloves in our house and when we notice the street has trash on it, we will go out and pick it up until it's all done or until our trash bag is full (sometimes it's just a little, sometimes it's a lot). It doesn't take long, maybe 10-15 minutes, so that our street looks nice.

I don't pick up anything that looks dangerous or diseased (I don't touch drug paraphernalia or anything with feces on it) but will call 311 to come deal with these things. I don't have to call often -- it's usually just napkins, paper, fast food containers, etc.

It's gotten much better in the 7 years I've lived here, and I like to think I've contributed to that -- I think people are less likely to throw trash on the ground if they don't already see trash there, and I also know my neighbors see me picking up trash and might think twice before throwing trash down that they know I will need to pick up later. I don't get mad when people throw trash on the ground, but I will politely ask them to pick it up if I see it happen, and remind them that people live here and kids play on the street and that the trash attracts rats and roaches. People are usually polite about it and do it -- I've only run into a few belligerent young people who will get mad about it, and I just turn around and walk away and then pick up later.

I do not think it's worse since the pandemic. I think it's about the same. Maybe a bit worse in the summer when people tend to congregate in the street more, but then there were also long stretches last year when eveythign was shut down so there was nothing. So it balances out.[/quote]
