You are going to get a bunch of helicopters here but the reality is that there is no policy by the county for K and onwards (there is for Head Start.) And the other reality is that most kids back in our day and even now all across the county, walk to and from their bus stop without parents. I mean in NYC, kids over 8 are told they no longer need a parent for buses and subway to get to school. Their student card is single use only the year they turn 8. I think our suburban, middle class and affluent areas coddle kids in a "we are good parents" way and like showing up to gossip and wear business wear or trendy yoga gear on. This is absolutely not the norm most places and we really infantilize our kids for our vanity and socialization. Want to put on a show, but we literally give our kids no autonomy, street smarts, and socialization skills of their own. Bus stops tend to have more parents than kids these days. It is freaking weird. Middle school last year more than half the kids had parents dropping them off in cars or standing at the bus stop. We are talking a neighborhood with no drive through access and no bus stop is more than a 1/8 mile away from the furthest house. I haven't gotten to high school yet. I am scared If your child is asking to walk alone, let them. They will be absolutely fine and better for it
Finally! I don't understand MoCo parents on this, either. When I grew up, I also never saw parents at bus stops. Kids walked to school in first grade. I didn't, since I lived out of town, but I definitely remember walking around town with friends after school in third grade. Out here, a few years back I remember a coworker telling me she needed to leave a meeting early so that she'd be home when her son got home from school. Her son was 16 years old, and by her own admission, was mature and responsible. I thought she was kidding and actually laughed... I just got a confused look back.
