We had three 1-0 wins in knock out games while relying on fitness and set pieces. But make no mistake we overachieved because our roster was pretty poor and we got lucky at times.
Did you watch the games? The players grew as a team over the course of the tournament. They gave up one goal on a penalty shot. That’s it. You can get lucky once not every game. The players are young(that shows) but there is talent there. You are sleeping on this. I have been watching the USMNT since 1990.
Yes, I watched all USMNT games in this tournament. The only game where we dominated was our second game, but it was a against very poor Martinique. You don't learn much about players where the opponent is so weak. We won the remaining five games against some very mediocre opponents with the same score 1-0. And, yes, we rode our luck with opponents missing penalty kicks and easy chances and Turner came up with some huge saves. This was probably our C team and it punched above its weight because it lacked talent and creativity. Our top scorer scored only 2 goals even though we played 6 games against relatively weak opposition. The only players that I see likely to break into the squad for the WC qualifiers are Hoppe, Acosta, Sands, Robinson, and Turner. Dike did not earn the call back based on his performance, but he offers a different profile and might get a call up if coaches want a target forward for certain games. Acosta will back up Tyler Adams, Hoppe has a legitimate chance to compete for the starting spot at striker, where nobody has claimed a starting spot. Turner will probably be our 3rd keeper because of his poor distribution (he is a very good shot stopper), but it could change if Steffen and Horwath do not get playing time with their clubs. Robinson and Sands have probably moved up sufficiently in our CB pecking order to the point that at least one of them will make the roster for the WC qualifiers.
Turner is the best GK the US has IMO. I thought Williamson and Busio did nice work also.
