Ah, but they have learned the hard way you won't chose to date them anyway.  The average male height (at 20 years old) in the US is 5'9", which is almost exactly the average -minimum- height women specify in online dating.

A 5'8" guy who lists himself at 5'10" suddenly finds he has -far- higher response rates.  They are hoping that in person the 5'5" woman who specified she wanted nobody shorter than 5'10" won't eliminate him for being just under her cutoff.
