At least Chief Contee is trying to do something. More officers doing bike patrols in certain areas. He's being completely hamstrung by the city council in terms of resources, but he's making some plays. https://wjla.com/amp/news/local/dc-police-introduce-yet-another-crime-fighting-initiative-officers-on-bikes-and-scooters?__twitter_impression=true That tax increase they passed the other day but nothing to deal with the increased crime issue.
I think it's a great idea. Part of the reason violent crime has increased across the nation is the lack of trust in police. Now, part of that is earned, but part of that is because of the constant negative coverage of cherry-picked incidents. (And violent crime increases are not solely attributable to strains on police; there have also been astronomical increases in gun sales over the past year). Bike patrols both help increase visible police presence, but they also help humanize everyone. The community starts to see police as normal people who can often help them. And the police start to see the community in all its complexities -- not just its need to prevent/solve crime. Community relations improve, and that helps build trust. And crime will decrease. This is just one study on how the perception of trust in police drives gun violence. But there has long been a connection. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jan/21/police-gun-violence-trust-report It benefits us all to repair police/community relations.
