I enjoy and appreciate this forum for the most part. Here are a few things I would change: 1) I would like posts from people who, if not trolls, post the same thing, using the same language, in every thread, even if the posts aren't relevant, to be removed when reported. 2) I wouldn't mind a forum that was just for support, where no judging is allowed. Every time I vow to quit this forum, it is after reading a post from a struggling person who clearly is looking for empathy get judged and torn apart by vicious DCUMers.
I love #2. I do come on here some times for more practical info (like I'll post in the Infants/Toddlers thread when I'm looking for a specific product, or same thing with Fashion/Beauty). I like the crowd sourcing aspect. But the threads I enjoy the most are the ones where people are just discussing kind of thorny personal issues and looking for empathy and support. It's the most human thing about DCUM and has been a genuine source of support for me during the pandemic. But it can be very hard to maintain that kind of interaction because there is almost always someone who will come in and just be cruel or purposefully obtuse. There are also a lot of people on DCUM who think people are ALWAYS looking for advice. Even when they don't ask for it. I am so tired of all the posts from people demanding additional info about a situation "so we can give you better advice" or getting mad at an OP for "refusing to take our thoughtful advice." Every time, I'm like "They don't want advice! You just feel a pathological need to give it out! You need to examine your impulses for controlling other people because if you're like this on here, imagine how the people who actually know you must feel!" But I don't, because it wouldn't be productive.
