Yeah, that's not how it works. With 23 at one school, I'm suprised there wasn't a positive recorded.
The first US case who flew into Seattle and died weeks later. They did tracing, and tested more than fifty people who were on an airport shuttle with him. None tested positive. Some people believe they messed up the testing and this is how it spread to the nursing homes.
It is known that a large batch of early tests were defective and had a high failure rate (link below). So it is possible that the tests gave false negatives at that time. This is less of an issue now with PCR tests and more is known about the level of contact needed to spread Covid. Without knowing the shuttle conditions (like length of the shuttle, whether windows were open, how people were positioned) its hard to assess how risky it would have been, but it also seems like due to the flawed testing infrastructure at that point, community spread could have come from another source than the person who died (who would have been more likely to have been given multiple tests to confirm a positive at that point). An asymptomatic or less symptomatic person would be less likely to get tested at all in early 2020, or might have gotten a false negative and not pursued further testing. https://www.npr.org/2020/11/06/929078678/cdc-report-officials-knew-coronavirus-test-was-flawed-but-released-it-anyway With both parties wearing masks, they could very well not have other students test positive. Especially older kids who at least have some awareness. Also, I’ve never seen any school systems that require contacts to get tested, and a lot of kids have low or no symptoms and will probably just quarantine and not get tested so who knows. I don’t think we have full data yet, but there is emerging data that suggest higher percentages of kids have antibodies than were thought to be infected based on testing data. https://www.cell.com/med/pdf/S2666-6340(20)30020-9.pdf Overall I do think in person activities for children are relatively safe with reasonable precautions, and I have been working in person with children since the summer. But my experience is most of the time child contacts don’t pursue testing. So there may be some limits to the conclusions we can make. Also in regards to when children are identified as contacts I’ve only seen it (roughly) as less than 6 feet distance for 15 min or more or without masks for some reason. So basically, it will be children who are in the same class(es) or teams as someone who tests positive and had that level of close contact as identified by the health department questions. Being in the same building would not do it, and even the same classroom not necessarily if they can answer both parties had masks and were 6+ feet of distance. Lunch could be an issue, as well as some athletic activities where 6 feet can’t be maintained. This is mostly where I have personally seen close contacts identified with this age. For secondary kids in gen ed a significant portion is athletics. Not arguing against athletics and I coached a winter sport when VHSL opened up again as well with many unknowns. But there are athletic activities where those conditions couldn’t be maintained and led to both quarantines and multiple positives within a group. “Contacts of contacts” are not identified or notified for quarantine purposes, so yes, the post about the neighbor’s uncle and neighbor being outside is not accurate.
