When you are ready/allowed to take the road test, you have to schedule it. There is often a huge wait. Apparently they are now officially allowing driving schools to administer the test, which might help. Pay really close attention to the vehicle requirements for the road test - they mean them. If the car you are using doesn't have an emergency brake between the seats that the test administrator can reach, you won't be allowed to test. That was challenging for me as our car doesn't have an emergency brake there and the first 3 friends I asked had the same issue with their cars. Maybe if you take the test through a driving school, you can use their car and it'll be fine.

Either way, the permit is first. Documentation is the biggest issue. The knowledge test is easy if you know how to drive and what the actual rules are. You can ask about the other stuff at the DMV.[/quote]
