I'm also work and make good money  - but we were talking to our financial advisor last year and he was asking us our retirement plan. And we said we want a plan for comfortably retiring at age 55.  He said, wow, with you guys and your extremely successful careers, i'm surprised you want to retire that young - most of my clients with those profiles are career obsessed and never plan on retiring.  To which we said, we're open to working past 55, but most people we know get fired before then so we had better have a plan to not have to work.  Anything past age 55 is gravy.  We have so many friends who were making close to 7 figures, spending like mad in their 40s and 50s - second homes, crazy expensive vacations for them and all their grown kids, private schools, colleges , expensive cars, etc. And then when they got fired, they NEEDED to find a new job because they didn't have enough to retire.
