This is just my opinion, but the only pro I can come up with is that I've stayed employed during the pandemic. Otherwise it is the worst company I've ever worked for. My job is nothing like the job description and I feel like I'm regressing. It's commonly said that you either love or hate Amazon. I've found that the ones who love it are competitive, political, and very vocal about BIG IDEAS (that are usually not executed in the end, and are sometimes others people's ideas). I've worked in three different teams (lots of restructuring is common) and none have been great. There are some great people and most have told me they're job hunting. My colleague who absolutely loves Amazon has never worked anywhere else, if that tells you anything! I wouldn't work there unless I were unemployed. Actually I just thought of another pro....it's made me appreciate more my past jobs that I loved!
Haha...a friend/former colleague of mine once pointed me to a Glassdoor review that called Amazon "Lord of the Flies cross with Atlas Shrugged" (here you go: https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-Amazon-RVW8174654.htm). We were at a company that had a lot of ex-AWS leadership. It was truly bizarre what the former AWS folks seemed to think was normal or constituted good management practices. Every once in a while, I'm attracted by what they are doing. I'd probably double my income going there...but then I remember every miserable thing I've ever heard about working there, and I deal with my own seemingly minor in comparison workplace issues.
Good gracious! That glassdoor piece is grear, thanks for sharing! I agree, it's bizarre what Amazon considers "normal." True Amazonians also seem to pride themselves on being "peculiar," at which I just nod and smile. I'm glad my honest answer was helpful. I feel a bit guilty every time I give my honest opinion about it, as I know many people thrive there and love it. I'm lucky I've been able to hang on long enough to avoid repaying my signing bonus. I'm lucky beyond words to have an offer for the new year, and I'll never be so happy to resign from a job!
