Just like any college student your child needs to pick a major that s/he finds interesting and that will lead to employment after graduating.  Most athletes do not go pro so do not make the mistake of thinking that your kid will.

Your kid's primary focus needs to be on getting a good education so he or she can find a job after college.  In the meantime he or she will work two jobs, attending college full-time and playing a sport full-time.  The only difference being off-season makes is that the athlete isn't traveling; otherwise off-season is as much work as in-season.

Our kids have loved being athletes in college and wouldn't change the experience for anything.  But make no mistake, it is hard to be a good scholar and a good athlete.
